General Ledger Accountant

Established by Congress in 1974, the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is the country’s single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans. Under the supervision of the Accounting Manager, the General Ledger Accountant is responsible for account analysis, assisting with the weekly vouchers payable process and the monthly grant payments process, and creating the monthly payroll general ledger entry. This position is included in a collective bargaining unit represented by the International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers, Local 135.


  1. Ensures proper accounting procedures are followed for authorization of all payments in accordance with LSC’s accounting manual. Ensures payments have proper authorization and budget application through general ledger codes.
  2. Maintains records that establish an appropriate audit record, and assists with answering confirmation request from the auditors of LSC grantees.
  3. Processes payments for accounts payable invoices from vendors and travel expense reports for LSC staff and consultants.  
  4. Reconciles LSC’s bank accounts, assists in the reconciliation of the payroll accounts and Social Security and Medicare payments;
  5. Analyzes and prepares interim LSC financial statements that are provided to LSC banking partners.
  6. Examines account balances and maintains multiple account analyses as required pursuant to the work plan schedule.
  7. Prepares adjusting general journal entries, as required.
  8. Assists with the annual audit by providing auditor requested documentation and any related schedules.
  9. Assists with the annual audit and prepares support schedules for filing of LSC’s tax return Form 990.
  10. Answers inquiries from vendors regarding payments and directors when reviewing charges to their budgets.
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

A bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field and a minimum of one year of accounting experience. Proficiency in the use of a calculator and Microsoft Office Suite with strong experience with Excel; knowledge of computerized accounting systems is required.


Salary: $53,000 (including locality pay)
