The Legal Services Corporation is the single largest funder of civil legal services in the nation. Established by Congress, LSC operates as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that provides grants for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans. The grants are awarded to nonprofit legal aid programs in every state, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories. The legal aid programs address the civil legal needs of the elderly, veterans and military families, victims of domestic violence, people with disabilities, tenants and homeowners facing foreclosure or eviction, victims of natural disasters, and others.

Justice Department Official at White House Event Applauds LSC Cooperation in New Elder Abuse Project

At a White House event today commemorating World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Deputy U.S. Attorney General James M. Cole called civil legal aid “a missing link” in the effort to protect older Americans.

“Legal services programs have a unique opportunity to prevent and remedy elder abuse, especially the scourge of financial exploitation.”  But, he added, “legal services program staff too often don’t have the specialized training on how to identify and support older victims, and how to harness their existing expertise to respond to older victims’ special needs.”
