Some Hotels are Threatening for Non-Payments Despite Halt on Evictions

Even after a warning by North Carolina’s attorney general, some families said hotels are still threatening to put people out on the street for nonpayment. Isaac Sturgill, an attorney with Legal Aid of North Carolina, said even if hotels threaten to put residents out, police appear to be abiding by the state’s moratorium on evictions.

“Police are aware they will respond and speak to family, but ultimately if police believe the family is living there. They should not make arrests and should let the manager know this is a civil matter that needs to be taken up by the courts," said Sturgill.
