Texas RioGrande Legal Aid Attorney Offers Advice to People Returning to Work

What protections do workers have in that they event they feel unsafe at work? In a recent announcement, the Department of Labor stated that workers who refuse to return to work out of general safety concerns cannot continue to collect unemployment benefits.

Employees are especially vulnerable when it comes to navigating workplace issues in the midst of a pandemic and an economic crash that has left millions of people unemployed. According to Kathryn Youker, an attorney with Texas RioGrande Legal Aid that offers free legal aid for low-income Texans, for many employees, their best option will be to show up to work. Then, if their workplace isn’t adhering to safety standards, their next step is to request accommodations, in writing, to their employers.
