Can’t Make Rent? Here’s What to Do

The city of Los Angeles has passed a couple of local emergency measures to try to thwart evictions, and it’s giving renters time to pay back any rent payments they might miss during the outbreak.

However, tenant organizers and advocates say a lot more needs to be done. They’re pushing for a universal eviction moratorium and a whole-scale rent freeze or rent forgiveness program. 

“The eviction moratorium that LA adopted will help. But it will simply delay evictions—not stop them entirely. All it does is extend the number of time tenants has to respond to their own eviction order—and only under the circumstance where tenants have given seven days advance notice to their landlord,” said Leah Simon-Weisberg, legal director of the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment.
