Akron Municipal Court to Resume Evictions Monday

Akron Municipal Court on Monday will resume eviction hearings for the first time since March. The hearings will be held mostly over Zoom, a video conferencing service, but will be closed to the public.

John Petit, a lawyer with Community Legal Aid, said he is concerned there might be an “avalanche” of evictions over the coming weeks, as moratoriums lift and courts begin evicting more tenants, and as additional unemployment and rental assistance programs end. 

“When the CARES Act moratorium ends - that prohibits evictions for those getting subsidized housing - I think we’re going to see a spike. And when this community rental assistance ends, I think there’s going to be another spike there. It’s going to create havoc in the community,” he said.
