North Carolina has a new program to help those facing eviction

There’s a new program for North Carolina renters struggling to pay their bills. The state is accepting applications for the NC H.O.P.E program. It’s a $117 million program meant to help pay rent and utility bills.

Housing experts said it’s not a lot of money, but it will help some people. They said if you’re behind on your rent or utilities you should apply now.

“We heard this morning that people are applying at a rate of 100 an hour, so that’s going very quickly,” said Jim Barrett, executive director of Pisgah Legal Services.

The program is using federal money. To apply you have to have a household income that is 80% of your area’s median income or lower and you must be at least one month behind on your rent or utilities. Experts said the money will be given out on a first come first serve basis.

“We’re going to see another huge spike of eviction cases leading up to January, so it’s really important,” said Isaac Sturgill, with Legal Aid of North Carolina.
