People share their story of homelessness and fear for those facing eviction
Shelters in Gainesville are having to turn people away, and many people are left with nowhere to go.
Gainesville resident Rachael Ryan recalls a time she was evicted in 2018.
"We were lucky enough to get in," she said. "We were walking down the stairs, my daughter looking at us load up the van. It was scary.”
Rachael was fortunate to get placed at Family Promise of Gainesville. Now she's a proud homeowner.
Legal Aids from Three Rivers Legal Services in Gainesville said there was already an affordable housing crisis in Alachua County, and the pandemic just made things worse.
According to data from the Eviction Lab, 623 eviction actions were filed in Alachua County between March 15, 2020 and Dec. 12, 2020.
