LSC Board Announces New Committee Chairmen

Washington, DC-Appointments to chair the five standing committees of the Legal Services Corporation Board of Directors have been completed, Board Chairman John G. Levi announced today.

Chairman Levi announced September 15 that Board member Charles N.W. Keckler is the new chair of the Board's Operations and Regulations Committee. The Senate confirmed a majority of the new Board in March and the new members took the oath of office in April.

Other standing committee chairs are: Victor B. Maddox, Audit Committee; Robert J. Grey Jr., Finance Committee; Martha Minow, Governance and Performance Review Committee, and Laurie I. Mikva, Promotion and Provision for the Delivery of Legal Services Committee.

"This Board is an energetic and serious group that hopes and expects to accomplish much during its time in office. Our overriding goal is to champion LSC-funded legal services programs at this critical time, when, as we were reminded once again today with the new Census figures, the ranks of the poor are growing," Chairman Levi said.

LSC is the single largest funder of civil legal aid in the nation, and currently distributes grants to 136 independent nonprofit legal aid programs across the country. Established in 1974, LSC operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation to promote equal access to justice and to provide for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans.

Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is an independent nonprofit established by Congress in 1974. For 50 years, LSC has provided financial support for civil legal aid to low-income Americans. The Corporation currently provides funding to 131 independent nonprofit legal aid programs in every state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories.
