In 2025, the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) received an appropriation of $560 million to support legal aid organizations who helped more than 6.4 million people.

Families with children, veterans, older Americans, and many other constituents rely on this critical legal support to stabilize their employment, housing, health and overall well-being. Currently, low-income Americans do not receive adequate legal assistance for 92% of their problems.

The figures presented reflect the number of people served by LSC grantees in LSC-eligible cases handled in 2024. LSC funding is not the only source of funding for legal aid organizations. LSC funds support the core infrastructure of legal aid delivery: leadership, intake, supervision, staffing, and case management systems that allow organizations to serve clients across a wide range of issues. This means that there is not a direct 1:1 relationship between LSC dollars and LSC-eligible cases. For example, if LSC funding represents 25% of an organization’s budget, that does not mean the organization would only serve 25% fewer people or cases. In reality, the loss of LSC could disrupt the systems and staffing that make all casework possible, resulting in much deeper service reductions and threatening the very ability of legal aid organizations to function.
