Introduction

The Legal Services Corporation's Technology Baselines: Technologies that Should Be in Place in a Legal Office Today (LSC's Technology Baselines) was first released in 2008 and updated in 2015. I am pleased to present a revised version of this comprehensive document representing LSC's ongoing commitment to embracing technology to deliver legal services to low-income people.

Since its establishment in 1974, LSC has been at the forefront of championing equal access to justice and enhancing the quality of civil legal services. Over the years, we have seen a remarkable transformation in the use of technology by legal aid organizations. From streamlining legal processes to enhancing communication and collaboration, technology has become an indispensable tool for legal aid advocates.

The updated version of our Technology Baselines can serve as a roadmap for legal aid offices nationwide, outlining the key technologies that should be in place to provide high-quality legal services, improve client experiences, and achieve greater operational efficiency, effectiveness, and accessibility. It is a product of extensive research, collaboration, and insights from legal, technology, and nonprofit experts. We have considered the evolving needs of legal aid offices, regardless of their size or resources. New sections include baselines for hybrid and remote work, cloud solutions, and cybersecurity threats. We have added more considerations and best practices to guide organizations ready to move forward beyond the baselines.

Whether you are an executive director, legal advocate, administrator, or technology professional, LSC's Technology Baselines offer insights and best practices to help navigate the ever-evolving landscape of legal technology. The Baselines do not outline specific LSC grantee technology requirements but are instead intended to provide helpful guidance to LSC grantees and other legal aid offices on the use of technology to provide high-quality legal services to clients.

I want to thank the dedicated team at LSC, our partners at Just-Tech, LLC, and everyone in the community who has shared their expertise to help compile this comprehensive resource. Together, we can leverage technology to advance access to justice, break down barriers, and create a legal system that truly serves the needs of all.

Sincerely,
