Loan Repayment Assistance Program

The 2021 LRAP Application Cycle will open for applications in GrantEase, LSC's new grants management system, on or around Monday, May 17, 2021. Returning and first-time applicants are encouraged to read through the Herbert S. Garten LRAP Program Description before submitting an application this May.

Overview

Attorneys who are selected to participate in our loan repayment assistance program receive loans of up to $8,000 per year for up to three years if they remain eligible and if funding is available. Applicants must submit a new applications each year.

Participating attorneys must use our loan repayment assistance program to pay qualifying law school loans and accrued interest, and must meet all terms and conditions of our loan repayment assistance program.

The debt to LSC will be forgiven at the end of each loan term so long as the participating attorney remains employed in good standing with our grantee throughout the term. Participating attorneys are expected to remain with our grantee for three years.

The Herbert S. Garten Loan Repayment Assistance Program, established in 2005, is funded by a Congressional appropriation.

Eligibility

Attorneys who wish to participate must be employed by one of our grantees and meet certain requirements, such as having a total outstanding debt of at least $75,000.  

Participating attorneys must use our loan repayment assistance program to pay qualifying law school loans and accrued interest and must meet all terms and conditions of our loan repayment assistance program.

Using a lottery system, we make loans of up to $8,000 to approximately 200 eligible attorneys each year. The actual number of loans made each year depends on funding levels.

How to Apply

Attorneys who wish to apply can do so through LSC's new grants management system: GrantEase. Prior to accessing the application, which will become available on Monday, May 17, 2021, new applicants must register in GrantEase and create their individual user account. Please watch the pre-recorded training or begin with page 102 in the GrantEase User Manual 2 on how to register in GrantEase. New applicants will need their organization's unique 6-digit LSC-issued recipient identification number to complete the registration request. NOTE: It will take 3-5 days for new applicants to complete their GrantEase individual user registration. Please plan accordingly.

Returning applicants should have received a GrantEase notification to complete setting up their invidual account registration on or around April 1, 2021. If you did not receive this email, please check your spam and trash folders before reaching out for assistance at LRAP@lsc.gov.   

Reporting, Compliance Requirements & Applicable Law

This section does not apply to loan repayment assistance loans to individuals.

Awards

In 2020, we awarded a total of 223 legal aid attorneys (including first-time and returning applicants) to assist them with student loan debt.
