Grantee Guidance

Legal aid organizations who are successful and receive one of our grants or contracts must assure that they will comply with our grant assurances.
To effectuate the requirements of Grant Assurances , in the event that one of our grantees merges or consolidates with another grantee, changes its current identity or status as a legal entity, or ceases to be a direct recipient of our grant funds at the end of the grant term or during the grant term for whatever reason, the organization will adhere and comply to the instructions for planning the orderly conclusion of its role and responsibilities.
Pro Bono Innovation Fund grants are subject to the same rules and regulations as other LSC grants. For guidance on the operation and responsibilities of LSC and our grantees, please review Laws, Regulations & Guidance .
Since 2005, LSC has made forgivable loans to attorneys employed by LSC-funded organizations to help them repay law school debt. The Herbert S. Garten Loan Repayment Assistance Program is intended to help organizations recruit and retain qualified attorney staff. Attorneys who are selected to participate in the Loan Repayment Assistance Program receive loans for up to three years, as long as they remain eligible and funding is available. This description applies to new applications submitted for the cycle that commenced October 1, 2014.
All grantees are required to submit reports and other information to LSC. Pro Bono Innovation Fund grantees have additional reporting requirements that must be submitted to LSC by the due dates provided as part of the acceptance of the award.
For reporting other services, please see page 20 of the Grant Activity Reports Guidance Document .
Case Service Reporting provides key definitions and responses to frequently asked questions regarding case management systems, reporting requirements, documentation requirements, types of case services, referrals, case definitions and closure categories, legal problem code categories and codes, private attorney involvement cases, and transitional questions.
Loan Repayment Assistance Program loans are provided for up to three years. The first time you apply, you are a new applicant. If you have received a Loan Repayment Assistance Program loan and want to continue your loan, you need to apply as a renewal applicant. You are not eligible to participate as a renewal applicant if you have already received 36 months of our loan repayment assistance loans. In order to be eligible for a Loan Repayment Assistance Program loan, you must be employed by one of our grantees.
A well-run legal aid organization is governed by a committed and involved board of directors that exercises independent judgment in carrying out its fiduciary responsibility in the organization. Key leadership, starting with the executive director, sets the tone for excellence and establishes a shared vision and mission. The organization should provide opportunities for development of new leaders and have a succession plan to ensure continuity.
Legal aid organizations should treat those seeking assistance and clients accepted for services with dignity and sensitivity. Effective representation begins with a relationship of mutual trust and respect. A legal aid organization should continually strive to maximize the effectiveness of its services and to achieve meaningful and lasting results on behalf of clients.
